The state of Oaxaca, Mexico, has long been an area of accomplished folk artists and these distinctive wood carvings began to appear in the 1940's. Oaxacan wood carvings, known as Alebrijes, are whimsical sculptures that depict animals and imaginary, fantastical creatures painted with vibrant colors and intricate patterns which express the beauty of creativity, nature and the spirit world. Each artisan who designs one, gives the spirit animal its own unique traits and personality.
