GR020

Vadito Quelites Grandes

  • GR020
  • Atriplex hortensis. An orach or "mountain spinach" collected along the roadside in the village of Vadito, NM.  Likely escaped from local gardens. More drought tolerant and with a milder flavor than spinach, with a naturally salty flavor, orach can be used like spinach, either fresh or cooked. Tolerant of alkaline soils, orach is easier to grow than spinach.  It is also healthy like its namesake, rich in vitamin C and high in minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium and zinc. When you harvest seeds for saving, save the seeds with the larger hulls, as they will be easier to germinate when you are ready to plant again.  From our Seed Bank Collection.

    • Grows in the cool season in the low desert.  At higher elevations or northern locations, plant in spring.
    • Prefers cool temperatures for germination.
    • Can grow to 5' tall.
    • Approx. 1.7g/120 seeds per packet.
    • Limit 3 Packets.
  • $3.95

Awesome

I grew these in S. California at about 500' above sea level. Mine grew well over 5' tall. I let a few of my plants bolt and collected the seeds and have started another round this winter season. I would munch on the young leaves raw while working in garden or sauté in garlic, olive oil and sea salt, delicious! Highly recommend!

Abundant and Resilient

I grew these in a garden in CO above 9,000' in elevation and they handled the intense sun and cold nights well and produced a ton of greens. I will buy this again.
