    • Zea mays. (Tarahumara Yellow Apachito). Similar to Tsetakame (Tarahumara Apachito) but these kernels are predominantly yellow, with occasional pink or apricot. One of the favorite races grown by the Rarámuri. Apachitos are the fastest maturing Rarámuri corn in the NS/S collection. Short plants. Used for cornmeal, tortillas, atole (a corn based drink), and pink variants are used to prepare tesgüino, a corn beer.  From our Seed Bank Collection.

EXTREMELY FAST MATURING

I grew some of these in Montana which is very far north of their homeland. Most corn brought from the south to the north will not mature, but this did. I unintentionally gave it more of a challenge by planting it as an afterthought in June 15, which is extremely late. It matured anyway.

This corn is very rare in that it does not have daylight sensitivity. It adapts to very different day lengths. It comes from the highest elevations of Tarahumara corn, coming from 7,000' elevation so it is used to cool nights which we have in the north. They seem to fill and dry down in spite of the season turning cold. I consider this an asset for breeding because it is so hardy and adaptable

The seedlings start out tall and skinny. The adult plants are about 6' tall, taller than I like. They have many suckers (tillers), which I don't like. the plants have fuzz all over them.

I found records that I grew some several years ago and I recorded that they did not dry on time that year. I don't know what the difference was.
