    • Vicia faba.  Collected in 1994 from a farmer at Ojito, south of the Spanish village of Chamisal, NM.   The green and tan seeds are up to 3/4" long and 1/2" wide.  The family prepared fresh favas by soaking in water for 3 days (changing water daily) and then peeling the individual beans and deep frying. Productive in our recent winter growout.  From our Seed Bank Collection.

    Vigorous and Delicious!

These are doing very well for me in the Sacramento Valley. They had a nearly 100% germination rate when direct sown and didn't seem to have any issue with heavy rain (nearly 10 in. over a couple weeks), even in clay soil. They have grown vigorously and outcompeted weeds despite being planted in a new bed with very little organic matter and a pretty substantial weed seedbank. Apart from some initial weeding before planting and in the first several weeks, they seem to have suppressed weed growth pretty substantially—I planted them with 6 inches of in-row spacing and a foot between rows. They seem to flower prolifically and have set quite a few pods, although the earliest flowers seemed to mostly abort (who knows why, could have been weather related). At the time of this review, they aren't quite ready for the first round of harvest, but I've sampled a few while I'm out in the garden and they taste wonderful.
